Winter Break Activities: Holiday Lights

Almost all kids love taking a drive and seeing the holiday lights.  When I was a kid, there was nothing better than driving around town and seeing all the light displays.  Now, they’re even more elaborate than I remember.  Inflatables, projectors, LED lights, synchronized displays…the possibilities seem endless.

This year, I thought I would make it cozy and fun for the kids. So, we brought along some blankets, snacks, and their thermoses full of yummy goodness. It made the excursion just a bit more special. Turn up the holiday music on the stereo, and we're ready to go.

There are quite a few large neighborhoods where we live.  Each neighborhood has that one house or set of houses that are must-sees.  During lockdown, we took our time and made three separate trips out to see the lights.  That may be a one-time thing, though.  This year, we planned to hit the most sought after one first to avoid the crowds.

Putting on a show

Yes, there are crowds at this house.  I think everyone in town knows about this one.  They have a large display that seems to grow a little more each year.  The owners put up a sign telling you to tune in to a specific radio station to hear the music that is synced with the light show.  It is really impressive.  They even painted lines in the street to indicate where you should park to watch.

The range of displays is large.  Some people keep it simple with a wreath on their front door.  Others have lawns that are completely blanketed in lights.  Of course, the latter are the ones the kids go for the most.  Our family likes to talk about the different displays during the entire excursion.  We keep a tally of the most popular items (snowmen, reindeer, Snoopy).  We also like to get ideas on what we should do to our own lights at our house the next year.

Great family time

All in all, it is one of the best family holiday activities we do.  I hope we can keep it up for many years to come.
