Valentine's Day: Canvas Heart Pictures

If you are looking for decorations for Valentine’s Day, make these cute canvas hearts.  Your kids will enjoy getting creative with these, then seeing their creations on the wall for the holiday.

You will need...

  • Stretched Canvas (these are 8″ x 10″)
  • Heart Cookie Cutter
  • Liquid Glue
  • Pencil
  • Glitter
  • Pompoms
  • Tissue Paper (or Crepe Paper)

*NOTE: If you do not have a cookie cutter, you can always draw a heart on paper and cut it out.  This can be used as a stencil.

First

First, use the cookie cutter to draw a large heart in the center of the canvas. Be sure to draw the hearts in the same position on each canvas so it looks uniform. Remind the kids not to push too hard on the canvas so as not to distort it or poke a hole. In retrospect, I would also advise to press lightly with the pencil so the line is not too dark.

Once the heart is drawn on the canvas, you can proceed with decorating. I showed my kids the options and let them decide which they wanted to use. Note that many other items can be used for this. Just be sure it can be formed into the heart shape. Larger items may be difficult.

PomPom Heart

First, I poured out some liquid glue into a small dish.  Then I used a brush and painted the glue onto the canvas.  I did this in sections just in case the glue started to dry before I could get the pompoms on.  You could also dip each pompom into the glue then place it on the canvas.  Finally, gently press down on the pompoms to ensure they are stuck to the glue.

Glitter Heart

My daughter chose to make a glitter heart (no big surprise there).  She also used the brush and painted the glue onto the canvas.  To help her keep the glue in the right place, we first put down some craft tape (painters tape could work too).  Then, she sprinkled pink glitter followed by the red glitter.  Using the two colors gave it a nice dimension.  Next, she gently lifted the canvas to let the excess glitter fall off.  Finally, she carefully peeled off the tape.

Tissue Paper Heart

My son chose to work with the tissue paper.  First he took a square of tissue paper, wrapped it around the eraser of his pencil, then dipped it into the glue.  Next, he carefully stuck it to the canvas.  Then he took his fingertip and opened up the tissue to fluff it up.  He ended up doing the top half of the heart in tissue paper and the bottom half in glitter.  It turned out really well!  I love the use of two different textures.

Once they dried, we hung them on the wall to decorate our house for Valentine’s Day.  It is now my favorite corner of decorations!
