Quick Coffee Filter Flower Picture

This is a quick and easy project that the kids can do in a moment of boredom.  It requires just a few around-the-house items and can be done in less than 30 minutes.  Or it can take longer if your kids are like mine and choose to make several!

You will need ...

  • Watercolor Paper (or any heavy duty paper)
  • Coffee Filter
  • Markers
  • Scissors
  • Glue
  • Water
  • Green Yarn (this is totally optional – I just happened to have some so I used it).

Step One

First, take your coffee filter and flatten it out a little.  Fold it in half once, and again, and a third time until you have a wedge shape.  Take the scissors and trim off the larger end to create a rounded edge – this makes the petal shape.

Step Two

Next, use the markers to color a design on the filter to be the flower. My kids advise not to color too much otherwise the watercolor effect won't work.

Step Three

Then, lightly wet the coffee filter to make the marker colors run.  Lay the filter on a paper towel to absorb the excess water.  Let it dry.

NOTE: If you do not have a spray bottle, you can just use your fingertips to carefully drop a little water onto the filter to help the colors run.

Step Four

If using the yarn, cut a piece a few inches long.  Run it along the glue to make one side sticky.  Then, lay it on the paper in whatever design you want.

If you do not have yarn, you can just draw or watercolor paint a stem and leaf for your flower.

Step Five

Once your coffee filter flower is dry. you can use the glue to stick it to your paper.  I chose to scrunch up the petals a little to make it look more three-dimensional.

Step Six

The picture is now complete, as seen on the left.  My daughter chose to add details before adding in her flower.  I agree with her choice as it makes the picture more interesting.

I listened to her and I chose to use watercolor paints to add a little ground to my flower picture.  My daughter chose to use the markers that we used to paint the coffee filters and she added an entire scene.  As with all art, to each their own.  Let your kids get creative and see what they come up with!
