Lunar New Year: Cherry Blossom Craft

Cherry Blossoms during the Lunar New Year

Cherry Blossoms are usually associated with Lunar New Year.  The Lunar New Year typically marks the ending of winter and the beginning of spring.  Cherry Blossoms represent renewal, power, love, and strength.  Thus, the Cherry Blossom is often present in the Lunar New Year decorations.

When you can't find any, DIY

This year, especially, Lunar New Year falls on the early side.  So, finding cherry blossoms to decorate with is quite a task.  Use this tutorial to make your own cherry blossom decorations with your kids.

You will need...

  • Crepe paper or tissue paper in white and shades of pink
  • Liquid glue
  • Scissors
  • Branches without any leaves on them

Gathering the sticks

First, we went out in the back yard and gathered up some sticks.  They had to be long enough to stick in the vase but not too long that the vase would topple over.  We also wanted sticks without any leaves or anything else on them.  If you find a perfect stick but it has sprouts on it, just clip them off with gardening clippers.

Next, cut your crepe paper or tissue paper into small squares about 2 inches by 2 inches. I stuck to using the pinks and white, but my daughter threw in some reds and purples as well. All look beautiful when done.

Once you have all the squares cut, it is time to assemble the flowers. I used about five layers of color for my blossoms. You can choose any amount of layers, keeping in mind that the thicker it is, the heavier it will be on the branch. I then lay down the first square and put a very tiny dot of glue in the center. I repeated this with all layers.

Next is the fun yet tricky part. I gently lifted up the blossom and scrunched it in the center to form a blossom. The tricky part is to make sure you keep the back part flat and not pointed (so don't twist it together). With the back flat, it will stick to the branch easier.

Finally, stick the blossom onto the branch. This can be done with liquid glue, glue gun, or even clear tape. Just be sure not to put too much glue as it will likely drip down and might make the branch stick to whatever surface it is lying on while drying.

And that is all there is to it. You can create several branches and place them in a vase, and you have a great decoration piece for Lunar New Year. You could even keep it up through the spring!
