Teach the kids about art with this Piet Mondrian art lesson. Then have them create their own version of this Mondrian style heart.
About Piet Mondrian
Piet Mondrian was born on March 7, 1872 in the Netherlands. His father was an art instructor and his uncle was an artist.
Mondrian began painting in his early twenties. He started with landscapes and then produced a series of paintings of trees. His abstract style began to show in his work. He then moved to Paris where he learned a lot about cubism. This is when his work became more geometric and less naturalistic.
Mondrian style
Piet Mondrian’s work was his way of representing the world in abstract ways. His most famous style is the use of bold black lines that outlined different sized blocks of white, red, yellow, or blue. This is the style that inspires our project.
You will need ...
Red Construction Paper
White Drawing Paper
Pencil
Ruler
Scissors
Glue
Markers in Red, Yellow, Blue, and Black
Black Sharpie
Step One
Using the pencil, draw a large heart onto the white drawing paper.
Step Two
With the pencil and the ruler, lightly draw lines vertically through the heart. Use random spacing. Then, draw lines horizontally through the heart. It is ok if the lines go outside of the heart. Remind the kids to draw lightly as some of the lines will need to be erased later. I also advised the kids not to draw too many lines as the picture will look crowded.
Step Three
Use an eraser to erase random lines on the drawing. This will create different shapes and sizes and keep the drawing from just looking like a grid.
Step Four
With the sharpie, trace the heart as well as the lines inside the heart.
Step Five
With the markers, color in random spaces. I told the kids to only color in the spaces with straight edges. I also reminded them that there needs to be some white spaces, too. This was only to keep them from coloring in the entire heart.
Step Six
Carefully cut out the heart (keeping the bold black edge) and paste it onto the red paper. And the piece is complete!
