Kids Painting with Watercolor Bubbles

July is World Watercolor Month.  Most kids love to use watercolors.  They also love bubbles.  Since my kids still love chasing bubbles, I thought I would combine everything into a fun art project.  They had a blast and the bonus was having more time outside to play!

You will need ...

  • Bubble Solution
  • Food coloring
  • Watercolor Paper (or any heavy-duty paper)
  • Bowls, if necessary

If you do not have bubble solution on hand, a mix of dish soap and a little water will do the trick.

If you do not have a bubble wand on hand, you can also fashion a paper clip into a tiny bubble wand.

Step One

First, mix your colors.  We stuck to the basic colors but mixing to create other colors is definitely encouraged.  We did find that the more coloring you add, the better.

Step Two

We tried two different methods to getting the bubbles onto the paper.  My son chose to swat the bubbles with the paper.  This worked and resulted in a more muddled picture.

My daughter opted for the catching method.  She let the bubbles land on her paper, then popped them with her fingers.  This resulted in more defined circles.

Step Three

Next, repeat with the other colors until your painting is complete.  Then let dry.  Enjoy!
