Halloween Decorations: The Entryway

Every year, I decorate both the inside and outside of our house for Halloween.  When October first rolls around, Halloween is in full swing.  The decorations become more elaborate as the years go by.  One year, I started incorporating a theme in the entryway of the house.  The entry way is the one part that everyone sees – think opening the door 100 times on Halloween night to hand out candy.  It is also a safe zone as my kids are not usually playing in the entry way.  I don’t worry too much about them breaking anything (though it definitely isn’t a fool-proof plan).

The Witch's Place

This one was fun to create. Collecting the bottles took a bit of time - the kids love that some of the ingredients were in movies that they've watched. And probably the best part about it is that I don't have to dust much during the month that these decorations are up - witches let the dust collect on their things. Or at least that's what I tell myself. And this year, since they watched Hocus Pocus for the first time (and Hocus Pocus 2, of course), they love that the broom says Hocus Pocus on it.

The talking eyeball

This is one of the best parts of this entry table. It has a sensor on the front and when you walk by it, the eye opens, lights up and talks. He has about 5 different sayings, all in this creepy sorcerer-like voice. The first time I put it on the table, my daughter passed by it and ran away shrieking because it scared her so much! It was hilarious.  Though I will admit that most of the time, we keep it turned off.  Nothing like walking by it in the middle of the night and jumping half-way across the room.  We don’t need that.

It took a few trips to several different stores to find everything on this table.  I do love that the bottles are all different colors and shapes and sizes.  The skull on the books is supposed to have eyes that light up but it doesn’t work.  And I do wish the battery-powered tea lights were a soft white instead of a LED daytime light.  That would provide a better effect.  But I like that they are black and purple glittered, so I just ignore the light color for now.

Decorate Every Inch

Of course I am not going to leave my bright white banister there to glow in this witch's area. Instead, I covered them with this black mesh cloth that reminds me of The Pirates of the Caribbean ride at Disney. I also found some witch boots which I figured she would definitely remove and leave at the bottom of the stairs. And no witch's lair is complete without a little black cat. I once had a black cat but that was a long time ago, so this little ceramic one will have to do. She keeps watch over the boots.

As my kids were checking out the decorations, I mentioned possibly changing the theme for next year.  My son very strongly said no and that he likes all the spell stuff.  I guess that means I need to find another corner of the house to decorate with a new theme.

Beware!
