Fun Rainbow Candy Surprise Cake Tutorial

These candy surprise cakes are always a crowd favorite.  Everyone loves watching when you cut into the cake and all the candy comes spilling out.  This tutorial will walk you through making your own candy surprise cake.

You will need ...

  • Round Cake Layers or equal size, 3-4 minimum.
  • Candy
  • Frosting
  • Circle Cookie Cutter, a couple of inches smaller than the cake layers
  • Spatula
  • Cake Board (or something to keep the cake on)

Step 1

Take the first layer of cake and place it on the cake board or cake plate, securing it in place with a little dot of frosting.  Then, pipe some frosting on top of this bottom layer and smooth it out with a spatula.

Step 2

Next, take the next layer of cake and use the round cutter to cut out the center of the cake.

Step 3

Then, place that layer on top of the cake.  Frost the layer on the top but not the inside.

Step 4

Then, repeat step 2 with the next layer of cake by cutting the center out of the cake layer.  Place it on top of the cake.

Step 5

Before adding the frosting, pour in the candy.  Carefully pour the candy into the center of the cake.  Fill it to the top but not above or the cake will have a bump in the center.  Then, frost the top of the cake (do not put frosting on the candy).

Step 6

Place the top layer of cake onto the cake.

Step 7

Finally, frost and decorate the cake however you choose.  I like to try to match the decorations to the candy that is inside the cake.  Or you can match it to the holiday.

Now for the surprise

When you’re ready, just slice into the cake like you would any other cake.  When you pull the first slice out, the candy will come spilling out!
