Easy Homemade Flour Tortillas

During lockdown, we learned to make a lot of things that we never used to make at home.  Flour tortillas were one of them.  Mexican food is a staple in our house so we always had a package of tortillas on hand.  Once we tried these homemade tortillas, we were hooked.  The storebought ones just aren’t as satisfying and I don’t think we’ll ever go back.

You will need ...

  • All Purpose Flour, 3 Cups
  • Salt, 2 tsp
  • Baking Powder, 1 T
  • Warm water, 1 Cup
  • Unsalted Butter, melted, 1/2 Cup

Step One

Place the butter in the water and heat until butter is melted, and the water is warmed up.  Place the dry ingredients in a bowl.

Step Two

Pour the warm water and melted butter into the bowl with the dry ingredients.

Mix the ingredients together then knead the dough until smooth.  It takes a few minutes for this to happen.  Cover loosely with plastic wrap and let rest for about 10 minutes.

Step Three

Next, separate the dough into balls about 2″ in diameter.  Cover and let rest for 10 minutes.

Step Four

In the meantime, gather your supplies to make the tortillas.  If you do not have a tortilla press, get a rolling pin and some flour to lightly flour the surface when rolling.  If you do have a press, cut out some parchment paper to fit the size of the tortilla press and get some cooking spray to lightly spray each sheet when using.  Also be sure to get a plate or tray to keep the cooked tortillas on.  I like to cover them with a tea towel to keep them a little warm.

Step Five

If rolling: Lightly flour the surface and place a ball of dough on the flour.  Sprinkle a little more on top.  Roll out to desired thinness.

If using the press, place a piece of greased parchment on the bottom of the press.  Next, place a ball of dough on the parchment.  Then, place another place of greased parchment on top (greased side to the dough) and close the press gently to form the tortilla.  Lift the press and remove the dough and parchment.  The benefit of doing it this way is that you could press out some or all of the dough in advance.

Step Six

Next, in a warmed up skillet on medium heat, lay the rolled out tortilla.  Let cook on the first side for about 2-3 minutes or until the tortilla bubbles.  Then, flip to the other side.  Cook for 1-2 minutes.  Then, flip back to the first side and cook for about 30-60 seconds more.  Remove from the pan and reserve under a tea towel to keep warm.  Repeat until all tortillas have been cooked.

The tortillas are best enjoyed right away when they are warm. You could make them into burritos, enchiladas, quesadillas, or even fry them up into chips. They will keep in the fridge for about 3-5 days. Enjoy!
