This is a fun and easy decoration to do for St. Patrick’s Day. Make these coffee filter shamrocks and hang them in your window as a suncatcher!
You will need ...
Green Cardstock
White Coffee Filter
Markers in rainbow colors
Glue
Pencil
Scissors
Spray Bottle with Water
*NOTE- If you do not have a spray bottle, you could just drip water onto the filter with your fingertips.
Step 1 - Prep the Filter
The first step is to prepare the filter. There are a few different ways to do this. When we did it, one of my kids folded then colored the filter. The other kid did not fold it but just flattened it out and colored it.
So, my son first folded it in half, then quarters, then again to make a wedge shape. Then, he colored the one side and flipped it over and colored the other side.
Alternatively, you could just flatten out the filter and color it however you choose. This method only requires one side to be colored.
Step 2 - Wet the filter
Next, spray the filter. Again, if you do not have a spray bottle, you can just drip water onto the filter by wetting your fingertips and flicking the water onto the filter. Just be sure to stop once the colors are blended.
If you folded the filter, spray both sides.
If you did not fold the filter, just spray the one side that you colored.
Step 3 - Let it Dry
If you folded the filter, open it up and lay it onto a paper towel to dry.
If you did not fold the filter, lay it onto a paper towel to dry.
Step 4 - Make the Shamrock
While the filter is drying, draw and cut out the shamrock. I traced a bowl to draw the circle – be sure the circle is big enough to cover the filter. Then, draw a shamrock in the center of the circle. Finally, cut out the circle, then cut out the shamrock from the center.
NOTE: If you have a hobby knife, you could carefully cut out the shamrock from the circle and keep it for another project!
Step 5 - Assemble
Once the filter is dry, apply glue to the green shamrock. Then, carefully place the filter onto the green cardstock.
Be sure to place the filter with the brightest side facing down so that it is the side showing when the decoration is flipped right-side-up.
Step 6 - Hang it up!
So, in this picture, the one in the middle is the one that was folded. The two on the bottom right and left are the ones that were flattened out and colored. I like both versions. The one that was folded has very subtle and blended colors. The two that were not folded have very bold colors, but not too much blending. Both look festive and great!
