DIY Teacher Gift - Pencil Vase

It’s that time of year where I look for gift ideas for our wonderful teachers.  I usually bake stuff for them, but I also like to have something to give that is from the kids since it should be a thank you from them to their teachers as well.  But I also don’t want to give them a piece of art that they feel obligated to hang on to for some undisclosed amount of time.  So DIY practical gifts top my list of preferred items.

This pencil vase is a cute gift that is super easy for the kids to make entirely on their own.  Fill it with some handmade paper flowers and it makes a sweet gift that the teacher can keep in her classroom and use for any number of things – paint brushes, other pencils, rulers, and yes, flowers!

You will need ...

  • Glass Vase
  • Colored Pencils
  • Glue
  • Measuring Tape

Step One

To make sure that you have enough pencils to cover the entire vase, it is a wise idea to measure the circumference of the vase first.  Use a measuring tape to measure the circumference.  Take note of the measurement.  Then, lay out the pencils in the desired pattern.  Lay the measuring tape along the laid-out pencils to make sure both match.  Adjust accordingly.

Step Two

Next, glue the pencils onto the vase one at a time.  Place the glue onto the pencil, then line the pencil up with the bottom of the vase and lean it against the vase from bottom to top.  Hold it in place for a few seconds.  Repeat with all pencils until the end.

NOTE: I had my daughter use the glue gun because it would stick to the vase the quickest. The pencils fell off after a few days, so I had to reattach most of them using a stronger glue like Gorilla Glue or the E6000 glue.

Step Three

Finally, just check the entire vase to make sure all pencils are in place and secure.  You could wrap a ribbon around the vase to add a bit of decoration.  Or you could leave it as is.
