Book Review: The Last Flight

Synopsis

Claire Cook

The book opens with Claire Cook searching for a little privacy in her busy life.  Her husband and his family are well known politicians, much like the Kennedys.  They live in a beautiful Manhattan Townhome and attend lavish events.  There are downsides to her seemingly perfect life.  Claire’s every move is scheduled and tracked.  Her husband has a dangerous temper and is very controlling of Claire.  Petra, Claire’s friend from her youth, is her only safe place.  Petra is also helping Claire plan an escape from her prison-like life.

Eva James

At an airport terminal we meet Eva at the same time that Claire does.  Eva seems to be in a predicament as well.  After a quick exchange, the two strangers decide to help each other out by switching plane tickets.  Both believe this will be the head start they need to begin a new life away from their troubles at home.  But the flight that Eva boarded under Claire’s name ends up going down.  Thus, the world now thinks Claire is dead.

The story bounces back and forth between the history of Claire and the history of Eva.  We learn more about their complicated lives and why they wanted so badly to leave their lives behind.

Review

I do not read thrillers very often.  But this book came recommended and it did not disappoint.  The characters were very well developed.  Their lives and all their complications were realistic and believable.  The chance meeting at the airport was a great idea on getting these two opposites to cross paths.  It also worked in how Julie Clark chose to reveal each woman’s story.  The reader learned things about Eva right along with Claire.

Clark successfully and seamlessly transitions back between Claire and Eva.  I found myself wanting to know more about the one when it came time to move on to the other.  I also fluctuated between where I thought the book was going.  Towards the end, the plot twists and revelations made it difficult to put down.  The topics covered in the book lend themselves to great discussions on morality and relationships.

We have one thing in common.  Each of us is desperate enough to take the risk.  To turn our backs on who the world demands we be. – Eva, The Last Flight by Julie Clark
