Best Christmas Tree Decorating Hack

The dilemma...

Now I know this is a real thing. I have seen countless memes about the pain mother’s feel when they watch their young kids decorate their Christmas trees.  They all refer to the haphazard way young kids tend to love placing their decorations on the tree.  A clump here, a bare spot there, often times making the tree topple over due to unbalanced weight.  The struggle is real.

I can empathize

The "Grown Up" tree

I have always decorated my tree this way. No theme, no tinsel, no garland, no colored lights. This is how I grew up and for some reason it stuck. I like it because its nostalgic, but it also carries a tradition my mom started when I was young. We would always pick up an ornament from our travels or special events. So, when you look at the Christmas tree, all those fun memories come flooding back. I also decorate my tree by myself. No one else decorates it, not even my husband (not that he would want to anyway - so that works out). And Im not saying its a beautiful tree, but I AM saying that I got to decorate it in peace! How do I get away with this while also having young kids in the house?

The solution!

My kids have their own trees.  Yes, it is a bit excessive, but it started out small.  When they were young enough to place an ornament on a tree, I bought them a tiny Christmas tree.  They were allowed to decorate it their own way with their own ornaments.  It worked like a charm!  Eventually, we picked up a few more trees, and my mom even gave (loaned?) us one of her Christmas trees so they could have a big tree to decorate.  (Also necessary because my kids LOVE buying ornaments).

So, I am able to have the “Grown Up” tree in the family room, and the kids have their forest of Christmas trees in their playroom.  If you don’t have a playroom, you could also keep their tree in their bedroom.  I do suggest helping the little ones, and always going back to check on the weight distribution to prevent falling trees.  But in the end, everyone is happy!

*Note- I am NOT saying I dislike how the kids' trees look. I am just addressing the fact that we were all able to decorate our own trees exactly how we wanted without any input or direction.
