Amazing Buttery Buttermilk Biscuits

I LOVE a good biscuit.  Especially ones that are so buttery that you don’t even need to add butter to them (but you could because why not).  These biscuits are tender on the inside and have a crispy bottom and golden-brown top.  The recipe is simple and dependable.  These biscuits work for breakfast, lunch, or dinner.

You Will Need ...

  • All Purpose Flour, 2 Cups
  • Baking Powder, 2 tsp
  • Baking Soda, 1/2 tsp
  • Salt, 1/2 tsp
  • Granulated Sugar, 1 T
  • Unsalted Butter, 1/2 Cup plus 2 T
  • Buttermilk, 1 Cup

Step One

Preheat the oven to 425 degrees F.  Place the buttermilk in the freezer for about 15 minutes.  Melt 1/2 Cup of butter in the microwave or in a saucepan on the stove over low heat.

Step Two

Remove the buttermilk from the freezer.  Pour the warm melted butter over the chilled buttermilk.  Let sit for a few seconds.  Then, take a fork and gently stir together.  The chill of the buttermilk will form lumps in the butter.  This is the goal.

Step Three

In a mixing bowl, combine the dry ingredients (flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt).  Sift together.

Step Four

Next, pour the butter and buttermilk liquid over the dry ingredients.  Mix until combined.

Step Five

Turn the dough out onto a floured surface.  Using your hands, knead the dough for a few minutes.  I like to take a bench scraper and repeatedly fold the dough onto itself, creating layers of dough.  I do this for about 3-4 minutes.  Then, pat the dough down to be cut.

Step Six

Lay the cut-out pieces of biscuit dough onto a parchment lined baking sheet.  Leave about a 2 inch space between each to allow for expansion.  Next, use the remaining 2T of melted butter and brush the tops of each biscuit.  This will help them brown.  Then, bake them in the 425 oven for about 15-18 minutes (depending on the oven).  Once they are golden brown on the tops, remove them from the oven.

These biscuits are best enjoyed right out of the oven.  They will keep in an airtight container on the counter for a day or two.  They’ll just need to be refreshed in the oven for a few minutes.  Enjoy!
