Easy Painted Rocks - Ladybugs!
A few months ago, my daughter used a ladybug growing kit and raised ladybugs. The larvae came in the mail and after awhile, they grew into actual ladybugs. It really was neat. So, today’s lesson was all about ladybug facts. And since we already grew the actual ladybugs, the activity was to paint garden rocks to look like ladybugs.
Some quick ladybug facts
- There are over 5,000 different species of ladybugs.
- Not all ladybugs are red. The ones that my daughter raised were actually pinkish in color (which she of course LOVED).
- When a mother lays her eggs, she lays some “dummy” eggs that are unfertilized to serve as food for the larvae.
- Ladybug larvae grow quickly and shed their skin several times before becoming a pupa.
- Ladybugs have two sets of wings. The outer wings (which we see with the spots) which serve for protection, and the inner wings which help them to fly.

- Acrylic paint

Step One
The first thing I would recommend is to wash off the rocks. It helps to ensure that the paint will adhere better. Also, we found that these unfinished rocks absorbed the paint where the smoothed-out rocks seemed to almost repel the paint.
