Simple Art Auction Idea - Watercolor Fish
It is always a challenge to come up with a good art auction piece to make with the kids. I want it to reflect the kids’ personalities. The purpose of an auction piece is to raise money for the PTSA, so I also want it to be appealing. This project is perfect to do with the young ones.

- Watercolor Paper
- Pencil
- Scissors
- Watercolors
- Canvas
- Acrylic Paint in different shades of blue
- Large Paint Brush
- Permanent Craft Glue
- Mod Podge Acrylic Sealer Spray
Step One
Draw a fish shape. Make sure it will fit on the canvas that you have with the amount of students that will complete the project. Using this fish shape as a template, cut out the required number of fish shapes from the watercolor paper.
Step Two
First, decide whether the fish are all going to face in the same direction or varying directions. Have each child paint one fish using the watercolor paints. Guide them by suggesting that their fish be a representation of themselves, or of how they feel that day. Do remind the kids not to use too much water when painting their fish or else they will curl up a lot when dry.
Step Three
Have one student paint the canvas to look like the ocean under water. Advise them to use different shades of blue to resemble the different shades of the water. Be sure to add paint to the sides of the wrap-around canvas as well.
Step Four
Once the fish and the canvas are dry, use a strong craft glue to stick the fish to the canvas.
Step Five
Once the fish have dried on the canvas, I sprayed it with two coats of Mod Podge Acrylic Sealer. I figured this was an extra step to protect and seal the final product. Hopefully it will help it to last longer.
And that’s the simple project that you can do with your younger students to create a fun art auction piece.
