Winter Break Activities: DIY NYE Noisemakers

IMG_9453

What kid doesn’t love a noisemaker?  And what else is there for them to do on New Year’s Eve but make noise?  This is a great craft that the kids can do in the days prior to NYE.  They can even personalize their noisemaker.  *Please note that this is best done over a two-day period so that the glue can dry properly.

You will need...

  1. Empty and dry water bottle.  Remove the label if you can
  2. Glitter glue, or liquid glue and fine glitter
  3. Small hard things like dried beans, rice, pony beads, buttons, etc.
  4. Small craft bells
  5. Curling ribbon
  6. Sharpie
  7. Scissors

Step one on day one

Again, the glue needs time to dry so it’s best to do this step on day one, then the following steps on day two once the glue has dried completely.

Remove the lid from the bottle.  Pour in just enough glitter glue and swish the glue around inside the bottle to coat it.  Gradually add more glue if needed.

If you are not using glitter glue, get a small dish and fill it with liquid glue.  Add in the glitter, making your own glitter glue.  Then, follow the above instructions for step one.

It is important not to add too much glue as it will take forever to dry.  Allow the bottle to dry overnight.

NOTE: instead of putting the cap back on, I just covered the end with a little plastic wrap to ensure the glitter glue wouldn't end up all over my child's hand. I did not want to put the cap on just in case it got stuck from the glue.

Step two, day two

Check to make sure the inside of the bottle is dry.  Then, add in the noisemakers.  Be sure not to fill the entire bottle with noisemakers.  Just a handful will do.  Let the kids know that if the bottle is too filled with trinkets, it won’t make that much noise when it is shaken.

Step three

After the bottle is filled with the noisemakers, take the cap and place a thin line of glue inside the rim.  Then, screw on the cap and let it dry.  Be sure the kids know that the glued cap likely won’t come off easily.  So, if they decide to put their favorite little trinket in the bottle, you’ll likely need to slice the bottle to retrieve it.

Next, look at all areas of the bottle and find any spots that did not get adequate glitter coverage. This is the time that you can use your sharpie to draw a design on the outside of the bottle to "hide" the un-glittered spot. Also, take your Sharpie and write the child's name somewhere on the bottle, if desired.

Finally, take the curling ribbon and cut a few long strands.  Tie them around the cap. Then, curl away.  This step is optional as it is purely for added decoration.

And there you have it!  A DIY noisemaker that your child made for themselves to use on New Year’s Eve.  They’ll have fun using it and showing off their hard work to everyone.
